Usher Ministry History

Through grace and by faith the Colossian Baptist Usher Board was organized in 1936, under the leadership of the late Reverend A.D. Holmes. To the call of duty-as its first president was the late Mrs. Lizzie Christian. The leadership and continued success was carried further by the late Sister Lucy Tucker, Sister Roberta Combs, Brother Theodore Christian, Sister Catherine Diggs, Sister Julia Dixon, Brother Jerry Welcher and Brother John Justice, all serving as presidents’ for number of years. Sister Chorine Williams, Sister Shirey White, Sister Synthia Martin, Brother Olen Rush, Sister Shirley Walker, Sister Patricia McCollum, Sister Sheron Taylor and Brother Willie Smith also have held the position of dedicated Presidents.

The Junior Usher Board was formed under the leadership of President John Justice. They served on the first Sunday during the 11:30A.M. worship service and on the fifth Sunday at the 8:00A.M. worship service. Under the guidance of Brother George Feagin, the Junior Ushers grew great in number.

In 1978, the Colossian Baptist Church Usher Board joined the Tidewater Ushers Baptist Conference under the leadership of Brother Smith Beckett. In the year 1995, the Usher Board along with the First Senior Choir formed a community activity in the clothing give-away ministry – sharing our blessings. Sister Sharon Taylor was president during this year. In 1996, Brother Willie Smith became president and remained through April 1997 when our church split. Membership grew during 1995 and 1996. During the year 1997 we left the Tidewater Ushers Baptist Conference.

During 1996, the Junior Ushers Vice President, Master Marlon Barksdale boldly stepped in the Presidents' seat when the President, Master Jamar Johnson was transferred to Korea with his parents.

In 1997 Sister Shirey White was elected as President; Sister Synthia. Martin, Vice President; Sister Mary Sue Day, Secretary/Treasurer; Brother Wilbert Price, Chaplain, and Deacon Lorenzo Miles, Liaison. During this time the church was without a pastor, but the Usher Board continued to strive for the best and sponsored a Walk-A-Thon in Newport News Park. It was a great success and is now our annual fundraiser. Additionally, a monthly' birthday rally was started to help raise funds for the building fund.

In 2000, under the leadership. of Brother Pete Johnson and ,Sister Linda Bing, the Junior Usher Ministry bloomed, once again and continues to grow. The dedicated Junior Ushers are on duty every Yd Sunday of the month at 8 and 11:30A.M. worship services.

In 2001 the Usher Ministry rejoined the Tidewater Ushers Baptist Conference and for the fourth year we sponsored our annual Walk-A-Thon in Newport News Park.

In 2002, Sister Linda Bing was elected president of the Senior Usher Board faithfully serving until 2004. Under Sister Bing's leadership the Usher Ministry continued to grow both spiritually and in number.

In 2004, Brother Kelvin Raven was elected President and the Usher Board officially changed their name to the Colossian Baptist Church Usher Ministry. Under Brother Raven's leadership our Ministry had the largest denotation to the annual Walk-A-Thon to date. Brother Raven served until his transfer from the area and the Vice President, Brother Bobby Blackwell stepped into the President's position.

In 2005, Brother Blackwell was officially installed. He continues the tradition of ushering in the presence of the Lord and welcoming all God's people with a smile. Under Brother Blackwell's leadership we continue to build upon the foundation of our past and present Ushers. The Ministry travels with and supports the Pastor as he preaches God's word throughout the community. Serving during and supporting our church ministry programs, revivals, anniversaries, home-going services, numerous programs, and usher ministries throughout the area, we attend Usher Workshops and training throughout the year, continue to serve and work annually during the Peninsula Coalition of Clergy and the Ministers' Conference; support the Tidewater Usher Board Conference by attending their meetings, banquets, appreciation services, and provide monetary donations to their scholarship fund. For the tenth consecutive year we held our annual Walk-A-Thon.

In September 2007 our Vice President, Sister Agnes Mendenhall retired her position and Sister Gracie Little stepped into the position. The Usher Ministry-continues to grow and we enjoy serving the Lord and the CBC family faithfully. The Senior Ushers serve each Sunday greeting and seating God's people at 8:00 and 11:30A.M.-worship services with the exception of the third Sunday when the Junior Ushers serve.

The Usher Ministry live and serve by: -Psalm 84:10, "... for a day in the courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a door keeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of the wickedness.

The Senior and Junior Usher Ministries have stood proud for 71 years and will continue to faithfully honor our church by serving as "Doorkeepers, in the House of the Lord."

Lord, when I sense Your call to serve, Help me to follow through; I must not just stand by and pray, When there is work to do.
